Time for a quick look back at my rides in 2018 and see what stands out as my Ride of the Year.
I’ve done more miles this year than I have in over 10 years. Most of them have been simple, sometimes boring commutes to and from work but there have been a few ‘special’ rides that I can consider for my Ride of the Year.
What criteria do I use to rate my rides? Distance? Time? Metres climbed? The beauty of the landscape? Could it be a ride on Zwift?…or some of all of these?
I’ve had a good think over the past couple of weeks and I think my ride of the year was the Ton around Brum I did with some mates back in June at the height of our great Summer.

It had a bit of everything. I’d been chomping at the bit to do a century for a couple of seasons and this was it. The weather was absolutely perfect, 30+ degs all day, I rode with a great group of mates, the course was unique, a clockwise, circumnavigation of Birmingham. Some roads were well ridden but a lot were new for me. I have some great personal memories of Cannock Chase and we rode straight through it. Great views without a ridiculous amount of climbing. The feedstop was at a beautiful cafe by the canal, eating and drinking outside and I rounded the day off with a few extra km’s to the pub and back for a pint and 200km. Tanlines topped up too…Perfect!
Other 2018 rides worthy of a mention
Last MTB ride in Fuerteventura while home was under a blanket of snow
The actual sportive was cancelled due to snow so a fair few riders took on a Zwift version instead. I nailed the finish lol!
Epic, epic day in the welsh mountains. Rain, wind and leg-breaking climbs.
My 2nd and last century ride of the year. Inspired by the Ton around Brum. Eventful day!
